Low Fell Post Office Update

In the Summer, we reported that the Post Office at McColl’s, and McColl’s, on Durham Road was closing in October. Sadly, this has now happened. Post Office Ltd do not have a new site for a post office but one business has shown an interest in having a post office on their premises.

However, Post Office Ltd have said that even if this successfully proceeds it is ‘‘highly unlikely’’ that it will be available in time. They are looking into the possibility of a temporary mobile post office in Low Fell until a more permanent one can start up.

Unfortunately, Gateshead Council has rejected their request to use Lowrey’s Lane car park or Cross Keys Lane car park for the temporary mobile post office.

Local Councillors Ron Beadle, Susan Craig and Daniel Duggan have asked the Council to reconsider, and the Post Office is continuing to look for other possible temporary sites.

Cllr. Ron Beadle said ‘‘We will continue to raise these issues with Post Office Ltd and the Council and will keep residents informed in future editions of ‘Focus’.

‘‘We would like to thank the hundreds of local people who completed and returned our survey about the post office. We have used the hundreds of survey forms to show Post Office Ltd and the Council how valued our Post Office is here in Low Fell.

‘‘Post Office Ltd have agreed that keeping a post office in Low Fell is one of their priorities’’.

The Post Office have also written to us and have told us that anyone who might be interested in having a post office on their premises should phone 0845 601 6260.

The nearest remaining post offices are:

Lyndhurst Post Office, 29 Wetheral Gardens, Gateshead

Saltwell Road Post Office, 66 Saltwell Road, Gateshead

Please share this information with anyone who you think might be interested.
